Recycle Hero Quiz – Adults

Hello,

Thank you for taking part in Recycle Hero quiz powered by EIT Food InformPack!

In this activity, you will check how much you know about the recycling of food packaging. We would also like to ask you some general questions about your recycling behaviour and background information.

The quiz will take you around 7 minutes and your answers will be treated confidentially.

Let’s start!

By clicking "START", I consent to take part in this quiz and I am aware that:
1. My participation is voluntary.
2. No personally identifiable information will be requested from me such as name, ID, or other contact details.
3. The raw data on which the results of the study are based will be retained in secure cloud storage.
4. Data from this study may be published.

Question 1

Bioplastic does not always mean the material is biodegradable or can be composted.

Did you know that if packaging is labelled “biodegradable” but does not state exactly in what conditions, it means specific industrial environments are needed to break it down. You can’t home compost such packaging.

Put it into a waste container according to the instructions of your local waste management company.

Question 2

We dispose of food packaging empty to not disturb its future processing. Food and liquid leftovers can affect the recycling process (don't throw a half-full jam jar in the garbage).

Neither glass nor plastic or metal needs to be washed before being disposed of in the segregated waste bin. It is enough to empty them. Food packaging will be washed at a later stage of recycling, so let's sort them and dispose of them in the appropriate containers.

Packages should not be washed unless the municipality specifically recommends it.

Remember that washing packages result in increased water consumption!

Question 3

It is made partially from paper, but also from plastic and aluminium, which are difficult to separate it by hand or using simple mechanical methods.

It is important to notice that different countries sort tetra packs in different containers.

For example in Poland or Spain you should put it into the PLASTIC/METAL container, but in Denmark you should put it into the GENERAL/MIXED WASTE container.

As you can see, the rules change depending on the region or country, so make sure to check them when you're visiting a new place.

Question 4

The plastic cup and aluminium lid are not made of the same material, but in some countries we can throw them into the same bin.

It is good to tear the metal lids off the plastic cups completely and throw them separately into the proper container. Remember - Donʼt crush the lids  – they will get too small for the sorting machines!

Question 5

If the packaging is dirty or greasy, throw it into the GENERAL/MIXED WASTE container, because oil/fats can affect the recycling process. If it’s clean - i.e. does not carry any visible oil stains - throw it into the PAPER container.

Since paper can be very difficult to clean (especially if it has soaked liquids, such as oily substances), it is highly recommended that dirty paper packaging be disposed of in the general trash, and only clean ones go to recycling. This is because the input of oily substances can strongly interrupt paper recycling due to the watery character of the process.

Question 6

This symbol is called Möbius Loop and it means that the packaging CAN be recycled and used to make new products after processing.

Question 7

The tidy man symbol doesn't specifically relate to recycling but is a reminder to not litter.

Question 8

The Green Dot logo means that the producer has made a (usually financial) contribution towards the recycling of packaging. It is a trademark of Packaging Recovery Organisation Europe.

Question 3

It is interesting that in different countries you should put it into the different containers.
