EIT Food #AnnualFoodAgenda at Transition Festiwal in Copernicus Science Centre
3D food printers, mobile polyphenol tests for fruits and juices, innovative food preservation methods and the afterlife of food waste. On October 4th, EIT Food #AnnualFoodAgenda showroom called 'Food open to the world’ took place during the 'Transition Festival’ at the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw, Poland.
As a part of #Annual Food Agenda season 4: #FoodSustainability theme, researchers from the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research PAS, together with MASPEX experts and agri-food innovators, brought us closer to the latest scientific and technological achievements that lead to the production of healthy, safe, nutritious food, with a maximal use of raw materials and a minimal environmental imprint. In the EIT Food showroom, we could find 3D food printers, mobile polyphenol tests for fruits and juices, as well as an intelligent plant lighting system that allows producing vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers throughout the year. Entire families could take a closer look at natural and functional food products, as well as plant-based proteins, exploited as alternatives to animal and soy proteins. During ’hands-on’ workshops and demonstrations, we learnt about innovative food preservation methods and food products with a 30-year long expiration date. In addition, the guests got familiarized with personalized foodstuffs dedicated to people suffering from diet-related diseases and checked the unique nutritional value of some selected food production side streams. Last but not least, everyone took part in 'zero waste’ games and explored the concept of 'food sharing’.

EIT FOOD C-SNIPER
Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research PAS partners in the development of an advanced biocontrol tool against Campylobacter in poultry.
- Campylobacteriosis, the most frequently reported food-borne illness in Europe, with an associated average cost of 2,400 M€/year.
- The increase of antibiotic resistance makes it critical to develop novel non-antibiotic based strategies to reduce Campylobacter risk within the EU poultry sector.
- The C-SNIPER project is focused on the development and validation of an innovative, efficient and non-antibiotic based mitigation strategy to reduce the prevalence of Campylobacter in poultry, that can be integrated into existing hygiene protocols.
Dr. Radosław Kowalski in the Editorial Board of „Animals” Journal
Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) nominated Dr. Radoslaw Kowalski, head of Molecular Andrology team in IARFR’s scientific group of Gamete and Embryo Biology, for a member of the Editorial Board of a recognized „Animals” journal (IF 1.654) – section: „Aquatic Animals”.

Institute wins grants of the National Center for Science
Scientists from our Institute received funding for implementation of research projects submitted in the National Center for Science contests: OPUS 16, PRELUDIUM 16 and SONATA 14.
OPUS is a funding opportunity intended for a wide range of applicants. The research proposal submitted under this scheme may include the purchase or construction of research equipment:
- Prof. Izabela Wocławek-Potocka. Mitochondrial and metablolic adjustments during bovine in vitro embryo development – examination of the molecular quality markers of the bovine oocytes. Budget: 1 142 536 PLN,
- Prof. Monika Kaczmarek. Milky Way to reproductive success: role of leptin in the programming of reproductive functions over generations. Budget: 2 195 550 PLN.
PRELUDIUM is a funding opportunity intended for pre-doctoral researchers about to embark on their scientific career:
- Katarzyna Walendzik. Role of epidermally expressed transcription factor Foxn1 in regulation and modulation of dermal white adipose tissue (dWAT). Budget: 139 993 PLN.
SONATA is a funding opportunity intended for scientists holding a doctoral degree starting their career in research:
- Dr Bartosz Fotschki. Polyphenols from raspberries and their metabolites as factors regulating mechanisms of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Budget: 1 295 260 PLN.
OPUS, PRELUDIUM and SONATA provides funding for projects intended for a 1,2 or 3- year implementation and allows for a purchase or development of research equipment. In the reported call, 1235 applications were submitted in the area of life sciences, with 241 having been selected for a total funding of 225M PLN.
#AnnualFoodAgenda – food trends and future consumers
Clean labels, probiotic foods, alternative protein sources, natural pigments and biohacking – these are only a few examples of food and drink „megatrends” set to make it big this year. On June 8th, during an outdoor science festival, researchers from the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research together with experts from MASPEX company will expose consumers to global innovations that change the ways we produce, buy, eat and dispose food.
