Prof. Barbara Wróblewska is a Polish representative of the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC), where she deals with the issue of food safety. A recent conference in Halle organised by the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina was accompanied by an international meeting of four working groups comprised by experts from Europe (EASAC), Africa (Network of African Science Academies, NASAC), Asia (Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia, AASSA) and America (InterAmerican Network of Academies of Sciences, IANAS), united in the Partnership of InterAcademy (IAP) network. Scientists discussed the challenges associated with the following key matters:How to provide every person with the access to a diet that meets all nutritional requirements? How to promote sustainable agriculture and reduce its harmful influence on the environment? How to diminish post-harvest crop losses and what to do with food waste?
It has been agreed that science constitutes a basis for the development of a hollistic food system by i.a. exploitation of new technologies to improve agricultural production. There is a need to introduce innovation and boost entrepreneurship to develop new food preservation and processing technologies and enhance food quality. In addition, the experts discussed issues related to healthy eating as well as the possibilities of supervision and introduction of new food evaluation methods.
A series of regional reports have already been elaborated, while the global report on the needs of agriculture, food industry and consumers is to be published in 2018.
