We invite you to be part of the project „Voltage across a hydrogel: A new perspective on cell’s membrane potential and its implication for embryogenesis” led by Dr Magdalena Kowacz

Project description:

Different value of resting membrane potential is characteristic for different cells’ types. Plastic (undergoing changes and fast division), embryonic, steam, but also cancerous cells have less negative potential than terminally differentiated cells. So, if we can affect membrane potential, we can possibly control cell’s performance (e.g. hamper spreading of cancerous cells or induce regeneration of different tissues and organs).

Our study in particular will focus on the effect of gel-like characteristics of the cell on its electric properties. We would like to create gel-based model of membrane potential generation, largely unaffected by specific biological processes (such as functioning of membrane pumps and channels). We can use this model to study effects of specific stimuli – CO2 (respiratory gas), infrared (metabolic heat) and mechanic deformation – on electric potential. Model’s predictions can be verified in systems involving living cells. We will start from algal cells and proceed toward animal (chick) embryos. Control of membrane potential can be very useful tool for emerging applications in medicine.

Task description:

You will be responsible for assuring conditions for smooth workflow in the lab, including in particular:

  • Supervision and maintenance of laboratory equipment (knowledge of technical specifications, calibration, measurements, in case of technical problems contact with dedicated service, etc.),
  • Monitoring of the amount/usage of chemicals and lab consumables for everyday work as well as writing respective protocols and preparation of specific chemical solutions and growth media,
  • Maintenance of algal cultures (in aquaria) and supervision and optimization of work with animal material (eggs) including acquisition, transport, storage, etc.,
  • Collaboration with PI and others involved in the project in finding technical/engineering solutions for specific challenges of the project’s realization,
  • Knowledge of the literature in the field.

Requirements:

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biophysics, Chemistry, Bioengineering, Physics or related field,
  • Basic knowledge of cell biology, biophysics,
  • Knowledge of the specifics of laboratory work,
  • Manual/technical as well as organizational skills,
  • Good command of English.

Previous experience of work in an electrophysiology lab will be an asset.

Wymagania:

  1. Tytuł magistra lub stopień naukowy doktora w dziedzinie biologii, biochemii, biotechnologii, biofizyki, chemii, fizyki, bioinżynierii lub pokrewnych;
  2. Podstawowa wiedza z zakresu biologii komórki, biofizyki;
  3. Znajomość specyfiki pracy laboratoryjnej;
  4. Umiejętności techniczne/manualne oraz organizacyjne;
  5. Znajomość języka angielskiego.

Doświadczenie w pracy w laboratorium elektrofizjologicznym lub podobnym będzie dodatkowym atutem.

Conditions:

  • Place of work: Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of Polish Academy of Sciences; Tuwima 10, 10-748 Olsztyn; Poland (www.pan.olsztyn.pl),
  • Preferred starting day: 1st July 2021,
  • Employment duration: up to 60 months,
  • Base salary 4 500 – 5 500 PLN depending on experience.
