Scientists manufacture, cosmic food, bacteria which sow ferment, flower slow food, superheroes on a plate, chemical mishmash and youth potions from antioxidants. These are just some of the workshops, which the scientists from the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research PAS are preparing for us during Researchers’ Night with EIT Food to commence on the 27th September 2019 right in the centre of region’s biggest shopping mall.

„You are, what you eat” – this information is flying at us from every possible angle. There’s not a person who could question the fact that our eating habits have a key impact on our health. Everyday, there is more and more information about how inappropriate diet contributes to the development of obesity, diabetes type 2, or cardiovascular diseases, currently responsible for every 5th death in the world (Lancet 2019). Still however, many of us don’t really know what it means to be on a „sustainable”, „optimal” and „well-balanced” diet. We are overwhelmed by the amount of products available in the supermarkets and the reports on their beneficial or harmful impact on our health. We still have trouble decoding food labels and grow more susceptible to the trends on diverse, often unproven, diets promoted on the web by self-proclaimed experts.

Answering these challenges, scientists from the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research PAS and experts from the food consortium Maspex, on the day Researchers’ Night takes place throughout Europe, will organise series of workshops, shows and experiments dedicated to the riddle of healthy eating – „You are, what you eat – Researchers’ Night with EIT Food”. Right in the centre of Olsztyn’s shopping mall massive laboratory will emerge, in which everyone, no matter the age, will explore, learn and analyse food, known not only from our everyday menu. We will test antioxidants and potions of youth, experiment with bacteria which sow ferment, and create chemical mishmash. We will design a diet for our blood cells, meet superheroes amongst foods, and participate in „zero waste” culinary workshops. We will also test our senses and find out what is flower slow food. We will discover alternatives to commonly used food additives, and taste products with a high nutritional value achieved thanks to an innovative method of food preservation.

The event is part of a project #Annual Food Agenda (www.annualfoodagenda.com) financed by EIT Food consortium. As part of this project throughout the year in the region of Warmia and Mazury, actions are held which raise awareness of the community on i.e. healthy nutrition, food safety, innovations in food production, as well as skilful waste management. Project #Annual Food Agenda is implemented in 3 EU countries – Poland, Great Britain and Spain. Scientists from the Institute of Animal reproduction and Food Research and Maspex group experts are leading this project in Poland.

Researchers’ Night with EIT Food is coming on 27th September 2019 in the atrium of Galeria Warmińska from 11:00 to 20:00.
