XXIth century in Poland and other European countries has been marked by a clear division of the food market. On the one hand, we are surrounded by the ubiquitous supply of mass-produced standardised and unified global food. On the other, however, we may observe a growing interest of consumers and producers in traditional food, which stands out with its distinctive quality. Such phenomenon results from the increased awareness of the society, paying more attention to the prohealth functions of the food consumed.
Our conference will provide a forum for the exchange of opinion and expertise on the challenges and future prospects for traditional food. Bringing together specialists in different fields, we wish to discuss the possibilities of increasing the attractiveness of traditional food products through the transfer of innovation and research results.
The meeting is dedicated to i.a. scientists conducting research focused on developing and improving traditional food, as well as on introducing products of this type into a human diet. Entrepreneurs, local authorities, social organisations and other entities professionally related to traditional food will also considerably benefit from participation in this conference.

Appreciating a wide and appealing range of Polish traditional foods, we invite the producers to introduce their products during our conference.

Conference areas:

  • Traditional Grain Foods
  • Traditional Fishery and Meat Products
  • Traditional Vegetable and  Mushroom Products
  • Traditional Fruit and Olive Products
  • Traditional Dairy Products
  • Traditional Functional Food
  • Safety of Traditional Food
  • Innovation of Traditional Food Production Processes

Registration:

Due to the limited availability of seats, early registration is strongly recommended to ensure your participation.

TRAFOON project – Workshop 2016

Training Workshop

From tradition to innovation in buckwheat, oats and gluten-free ‑ strategies for SMEs in production, processing and marketing

DATE: 29/06/2016
VENUE: Novotel Warszawa Airport, Warsaw, Poland
LANGUAGE: English with Polish translation
FEE: free, but registration is required due to the limited availability of seats. In addition to the workshop we provide lunch, beverages and snacks throughout the day.

Welcome Message,

Farmers, producers, retailers, scientists and representatives of non-governmental organisations (consumers and patient organisations) will meet each other aiming at improvement of and innovation in traditional and local food production chains with specific focus on buckwheat, oats and gluten-free.

The EU project TRAFOON (November 2013 – October 2016) aims at the transfer of knowledge to small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) to strengthen their market position. SMEs in the food sector are increasingly under pressure due to developing open markets, increasing demand of standardized and price-competitive food products, increasing importance of large retailers, and challenges in obeying governmental regulations. This raises the risk of losing many local and traditional foods and processing techniques.

SMEs of traditional foods and active in local markets must therefore extend their skills in modern and competitive production and marketing. TRAFOON aims to support. The work package ‘Grains’ of TRAFOON involves ancient wheat species (e.g. durum and spelt), oats and buckwheat, and the application of sourdough and gluten-free production and processing. Buckwheat and oats have a long history as traditional crops, with an innovative perspective in gluten-free products.

During the first two years, scientists in TRAFOON have been in search internationally for the needs in representative national and local SMEs. During the workshop you will be informed about this ‘Inventory of Needs’, and you will be invited to discuss with the speakers (representing different stakeholders) about their ‘lessons to learn’ based on the ‘Needs’ and on specific ‘Cases’. Together we will create better mutual understanding, explore possibilities for innovation, and define strategic goals.

The ‘Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda’, the end goal of the TRAFOON project, is of crucial importance to the EU to enable further steps in European research and policy concerning traditional foods.

Science Picnic „Art of Science” coming soon!

On Saturday June 25th, the Centre of Olsztyn Old Town will change into a giant laboratory, full of experiments, workshops and science shows. The researchers from the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research PAS will convince residents of the city that science is also a kind of art. Artists and researchers share a common passion for discovery, experimenting and a mind open to pioneering challenges. Theories created by physics, virtuoso experiments of chemists or images seen under the microscope are undeniable pieces of art.

Programme of the Picnic includes i.a. mind-exciting interactive exhibits of the Copernicus Science Centre, allowing the guests to test the speed of their reaction to light and sound triggers, and learn how to deceive our sight.

All families will have a chance to take part in the workshops on a gluten-free diet and learn what gluten really is and who and why should avoid it. They will also get in the roles of „Gluten seekers” trying to elute it from the samples of wheat flour. During hand-on workshops titled „Tasty skin”, guests of the Picnic will get familiarized with the practical use of fruit powders in the process of designing cosmetics, and take the samples of individually prepared creams home.

Scientists from the Institute of Geophysics PAS in Warsaw will help us to trigger our own earthquake and explain why shocks of similar magnitude cause little damage in some regions whilst catastrophes in other. Science shows prepared by researchers from the Botanical Garden PAS in Powsin will let us get an insight into the role of Seed Banks in the conservation of plant biodiversity in relation to species threatened by extinction.

Science enthusiasts will also try their hands at dactyloscopic workshops used in forensic science laboratories, and design their own models of bacteria. In addition, we can expect a show of plush organs taking part in the digestion process (1:1 scale), helping us to find answers on the questions about the length of intestine and super powers of our stomach

Old Town scene will host the competition called „Secrets of a human body” and workshops on building DNA with sweet jellies.

„Art of Science” Picnic will start at 12:00 in the heart of Olsztyn Old Town, and last until 16:00. Participation is free of charge!

Institute at the 20th Picnic of Polish Radio and Copernicus Science Centre

HEALTH – this is the title of the anniversary 20th Science Picnic of the Polish Radio and Copernicus Science Centre, which took place in Warsaw on May 7th, 2016. The event was visited by a record number of people who could enjoy research celebration events prepared by over 200 institutions from Poland and abroad.

Institute PAS in Olsztyn organized 5 edutaining science shows. ”Inside gluten” workshops explained the causes of the coeliac disease, while “Healthy reproductive tract” pointed to the factors contributing to the disorders of a female reproductive tract. ”Uninvited guests of our body” science show allowed the guests to learn about the dangers carried by ticks. What is more, researchers from the Laboratory of Microbiology presented germs transferred from hand do hand and instructed the youngest how to wash hands properly. In addition, we offered all the participants of the Picnic an occasion to visit a mobile laboratory for conservation of biodiversity in order to see the effects of acidification of the aquatic environment on the health of the fish.

Science shows by the Institute were visited by over 3500 guests.

Preparation of the uterus (obtaining receptive state), synchronized with the development of the embryo, is necessary to establish proper communication of the embryo and the mother during early pregnancy in mammals. Research conducted so far has not allowed elucidating a definitive role of molecules involved in the dialogue embryo-mother during pregnancy. Despite numerous studies, a key step in the process of breeding – embryo implantation in the lining of the uterus (endometrium) remains one of the least understood biological processes. It has been proposed that receptivity of endometrium could be altered by non-transcriptional, non-translational mechanisms including exchange of signaling and adhesion molecules from endosomal compartments that might include shedding of microvesicles and exosomes. It is worth mentioning that exosomes additionally to lipids and proteins contain mRNA and miRNA, the later seems to be important modulators of cell-to-cell communication.

The aim of this project is to elaborate effective method to isolate miRNAs and assess their content in the uterine exosomes/microvesicles form pregnant animals as well as profile miRNAs that can participate in the embryo-maternal communication at early stages of pregnancy. Next research tasks are focused on in vitro investigation of auto-/juxta-/paracrine functions of selected miRNAs in endometrial as well as trophoblast cells.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct research projects individually and in collaboration with other members of team.
