44 scientists, artists and research teams have been awarded the Polish Prime Minister’s Prize for outstanding scientific, technical or artistic achievements, and distinguished habilitation or doctoral thesis.
Dr. Ilona Kowalczyk-Zięba is one of 25 laureates awarded for distinguished doctoral thesis.
Dr. Ilona Kowalczyk-Zięba, assistant at Institute’s Scientific Group of Gamete and Embryo Biology, has been awarded for her doctoral thesis titled „Synthesis and effect of lysophosphatidic acid in cow’s corpus luteum – in vitro studies”, supervised by Prof. Izabela Wocławek-Potocka. In the in vitro studies Dr. Kowalczyk-Ziębas investigates whether cow’s corpus luteum (CL) may be the site for lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) synthesis and a target for LPA action during oestrous cycle and early pregnancy, as well as determines the auto/paracrine LPA action in cow’s CL. Obtaining data on the effect of LPA on CL activity may in the future lead to a reduced luteal deficiency causing early embryonic mortality, and this way contribute to the maintenance of pregnancy.
The Prime Minister’s prizes were first presented upon the initiative of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1994.
