3rd edition of ”SCIENCE is ART!” Family Picnic of the Polish Academy of Sciences has come to an end. Science shows, experiments, workshops prepared by scientists from 7 Institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences, supported by researchers from Warsaw University and Poznań University of Life Sciences attracted a record-breaking number of attendees.

The Picnic was organized by the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research PAS in Olsztyn. This year the host invited to cooperation partner scientists from the entire country. These featured award-winners of many national contests distinguishing the best science communicators. Dr. Tomasz Sulej from the Evolution Museum, laureate of Fame Lab contest, taught us the challenging art of preparing fossils from 230 million years, and dr. Magdalena Osiał from Warsaw University, winner of “Science Popularizer 2016” national title, familiarized us with fascinating experiments we could do on our own at home.

If we visited the stand of researchers from the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics and Botanic Garden in Powsin, we could learn how to walk on water, get an insight into Polish studies in Antarctica and check out the unique bank of seeds. Science demonstrations performed by researchers from “Science Populariser 2014” Institute of Geophysics enjoyed much enthusiasm of Picnic’s guests, who could discover the phenomenon of pole wandering with the use of a specially designed board. Researchers from Poznań University of Life Sciences and Institute of Agrophysics offered everyone a chance to become invisible for ticks and to see through a thermal imaging camera.

Hosts of the Picnic, scientists from the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research PAS in Olsztyn, prepared workshops on composing cosmetics with lyophilized fruits, contests examining the efficiency of our senses, experiments detecting pro-health antioxidants in drinks, workshops of building DNA with sweet jellies and competition in finding gluten in everyday food products.

Many thanks to everyone who embarked on this scientific journey with us. We hope you had fun while learning, experimenting, developing curiosity and exploring the fascinating world of science. Remember that we all have this gene of a discoverer – we just need to nourish it.
